How Each Handles Southern Utah's Climate
This is where local knowledge matters. St. George summers regularly top 105°F, the UV index is brutal, and monsoon season dumps fast, heavy water.
- Durability: both are the same concrete underneath. With proper base prep, control joints, and curing, both last decades here.
- Surface temperature: darker stamped colors absorb more heat — a chocolate-brown stamped patio gets noticeably hotter underfoot than light gray. If bare feet matter (kids, pool nearby), choose lighter color hardeners.
- Fading: desert UV will slowly mute stamped color unless the patio is resealed periodically. Plain gray has nothing to fade.
- Slip resistance: broom finish grips naturally. Stamped surfaces are sealed and can be slick when wet — a non-slip additive in the sealer fixes this, and it's standard practice near pools (see our pool deck page).
Maintenance: The Honest Difference
Regular concrete asks almost nothing of you — sweep it, rinse it, maybe seal it every 5+ years if you want extra stain protection.
Stamped concrete wants resealing every 2–3 years in our sun to keep color rich and the surface protected. It's a quick, affordable half-day job — but skip it for a decade and the color dulls and the surface wears. Budget for it going in and you'll love the patio for 25+ years.
