How Southern Utah Heat Affects Concrete — And How to Prevent Cracking

Why the desert is hard on concrete, and what quality installation does about it.

Why This Matters in Washington County

Concrete anywhere can crack. Concrete in St. George faces a specific gauntlet: 100+ degree summer surface temperatures, intense UV, big day-to-night temperature swings, occasional hard freezes, expansive clay soils in some neighborhoods, and monsoon storms that dump an inch of rain in an hour. Every one of those attacks concrete a different way — and every one has a known countermeasure.

The Four Local Threats

1. Heat and Thermal Movement

Concrete expands as it heats and shrinks as it cools. A slab that's 150°F at 4 PM in July can drop 60+ degrees overnight. That constant movement builds stress, and stress finds the weakest point. The countermeasure is control joints — deliberate grooves cut or tooled into the slab that tell the concrete exactly where it's allowed to crack, invisibly, inside the joint instead of across your driveway.

2. Fast Drying During the Pour

Our dry air and heat pull water out of fresh concrete too fast. Concrete doesn't "dry" — it cures through a chemical reaction that needs moisture. When the surface dries before the reaction finishes, you get a weak, dusty, crack-prone top layer. That's why summer pours here are scheduled for early morning, why curing compounds or wet-cure methods are used, and why the mix itself is designed for hot-weather placement.

3. Soil Movement

Parts of Washington County sit on expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and other areas on loose sandy fill. Pour on a poorly compacted base and the ground literally moves underneath the slab — the #1 cause of major structural cracking. The fix is unglamorous but decisive: proper excavation, compacted gravel base, and correct slab thickness for the load.

4. Monsoon Water

Fast storm water finds edges. If a slab is poured without correct slope and drainage planning, water gets under the edges, erodes the base, and the unsupported concrete settles and snaps. Correct grade — typically about 1/4 inch of fall per foot away from structures — moves water off and away.

What a Quality Installation Includes

Hairline vs. structural cracks: tight surface hairlines are cosmetic and normal as concrete cures. Cracks that are wide, growing, offset in height, or running across joints signal a base or load problem — that's when to get eyes on it. If your existing concrete is showing structural cracks, tear-out and replacement of the failed section is usually the honest fix.
